A radioactive nuclide is an isotope of an element with a higher than normal amount of nucleons (i.e. prone to radioactive decay). The half-life of a radioactive nuclide is how much time it takes for a sample of this nuclide to decay halfway such that half of the remaining atoms are radioactive and half are not.
Experimentally, this is just found through analytical chemistry. The resulting volume of radioactive material is logarithmic since it’s continually halving.
